Using Alias Protection on your server can help to lessen friction caused by issues regarding the name of their avatar and player inventory. It can also be used to restrict the users who are not specifically named from joining your server.
Before we begin it is important to note that a player's inventory and position in a world is stored according to the name, or alias, they choose. They may disconnect and reconnect from another workstation, and they will keep their inventory and player attributes from the last time they were connected to a specific world. If they rejoin with a different name, they will start fresh with no player inventory. Player names are case sensitive - Student1 is not the same as student1
Alias Protection was designed to allow users, both teachers and students, to password protect alias names when connected to a MinecraftEdu server. There are a couple ways this can be accomplished. Begin by starting a MinecraftEdu Server from the Server Launcher. Once the server is running, press the button labeled User Control.
Next you will be presented the User Control screen. There are a few options available. If Alias Protection is enabled, you can manually add users and a corresponding password. Teacher names will require the teacher password to login. Student names require a password of at least 5 characters. Teachers can assume any alias with the proper login credentials.
New users joining the server will be prompted to create a password to protect their alias. It is not required.
By selecting Allow only these users to join you are effectively locking out all other users than the ones you specify. In doing this every approved user must have an associated password.
This can sometimes be an effective method of having students take on assigned, identifiable roles during your lesson.
Remember - user names are case sensitive!
If you need to copy a user list from one server to another, or do direct editing of the user list (for instance to outright restrict the use of inappropriate names) - the file containing the user information is located in minecraft/settings/reserved_aliases.ini
